DIY Epsom Salt Suncatcher Craft for Kids

Salty, Sunny, & Shiney

Epsom Salt makes the perfect kids suncatcher craft

Epsom salt can be used in a DIY kids craft to create a homemade suncatcher by taking advantage of its crystal-forming properties. When Epsom salt is dissolved in hot water and spread onto a clear surface, it forms beautiful, frost-like crystals as it dries. Kids can paint the solution onto shapes or designs, and once dry, the sparkling crystal patterns catch and reflect sunlight. When hung in a window, the finished craft creates a shimmering suncatcher effect that looks like icy window art.

Recipe

Ingredients
  • Spoon
  • Measuring cup
  • Epsom salt
  • Microwaveable dish
  • Clear, plastic lid
  • String
  • Watercolor paints (optional)
Instructions
  • Heat ¼ cup of water in the microwave for 30 seconds. Then, add in ¼ cup of Epsom salt and stir until the salt crystals have dissolved.
  • Pour the mixture onto the plastic lid (just enough to cover the bottom) and then let it sit by a window overnight to dry.
  • When completely dry, the lid should be covered in Epsom salt crystals! Cut a small hole near the edge of the plastic lid and tie string through the hole so you can hang it
  • Optional: Add watercolor paints to the crystals to create a colorful design OR keep it clear. Both options are unique and beautiful
How to Use
  • Hang in window that faces the sun to catch the most rays. Watch them dance on the wall during sunrise and sunset.
