Tough workout routines can have a lasting impact on your body as an aftermath of muscle strain, ask any Olympic athlete. Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) provides muscle relief with its anti-inflammatory and relaxing properties to help ease your recovery. Try adding one of these remedies to your physical activity routine and enjoy the benefits of Olympic recovery at home.
Epsom Salt Foot Soak
The rush and adrenaline after an intense workout can be exhilarating. However, sometimes there is also pain that follows. Whether you are running a marathon or simply going on your daily jog, pampering your feet is necessary to avoid the discomfort. Take it from Gabby Douglas – being a gymnast she is always on her feet and swears by her foot cream filled with essential oils and Epsom salts.
- Place a towel on the floor and under your water bucket to capture any spilled water and to create a comfortable space for your feet to sit
- Pour ½ cup of Epsom salt in warm water and add essential oils, like lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint (optional)
- Dip your feet in the water up to your ankles, allow them to soak for 10-15 minutes
- Dry off your feet and be sure to moisturize
Epsom Salt Bath
Recovery is an essential step in any fitness journey to ensure the body is being cared for. Many athletes like Olympian Ashleigh Johnson use Epsom salt to ensure that they care for the body that cares for them.
- Pour 1-2 cups of Epsom salt into a bathtub (for larger bathtubs adjust to double)
- Run warm water then soak for at least 10 minutes
Epsom Salt Scrub
If you are looking for a quick alternative to using Epsom salt post an intense workout, you might consider a scrub. Although you may want to maximize magnesium absorption there may not always be time, so try this instead:
- Buy or DIY an Epsom salt body scrub
- Scrub into your skin, especially problem areas
- Allow it to wash off completely and be sure to moisturize afterward
