Crafting with Epsom salt

From craft projects with the kids to DIY holiday décor, Epsom salt offers endless ways to create and have fun. Epsom salt bath bombs and salts make easy homemade gifts. Try your hand at DIY luminaries, add a dusting of Epsom salt snow to your windows or an early frost to a fall arrangement of pumpkins and gourds.

Translucent or white? Timing is everything when you craft with Epsom salt crystals.

Fresh Epsom salt has high water content, and when the crystals get exposed to air, they will begin to dry and become white—often in as little as a week. If you’re going for translucence (say you’re creating luminaries for a wedding), wait to make them until close to the final date. On the other hand, if you want an opaque look to mimic snow, for example, make your craft at least a week in advance.

You can also paint the Epsom salt with a sealant to preserve the color you want. Just ensure the coating you choose is not flammable if your finished craft will be used near a candle or flame.
